my love

Whenever I hear the song "My Love" by Paul McCartney, I'm counting the seconds till it gets to the solo. The song itself is a bit sappy but the solo always kicks my ass. It's beautiful melody is played perfectly with a guitar tone from the Rock Gods. Its always meant a lot to me, this solo, because it always brings back an image in my mind of a first love of mine, Karen Crawford. We hung out together some in high school, and she never let on that she knew I was in love with her though somewhere inside I'm sure she DID know. It was always more about listening to music and making each other laugh and just being  a friend who was a girl more than a girlfriend. David Enloe and I used to go to her house at lunch with our chips and bottles of Boone's Farm wine and she'd play us some Frank Zappa or James Taylor (her favorite, not ours, but we were OK with it cuz we were with her). She was really cool to hang with. She was in with or at least accepted by the "cool kids" but was equally at ease with us misfits. She was at times stunningly beautiful and at others, ehh...but it didn't seem to matter to her either way. When I got my first car, a '71 Fiat 850 Spyder, she was the first person I wanted to drive around. So I put the top down and took her for a spin. We drove around for about 30 minutes before this song comes on the radio, "My Love". It was the first time I'd heard it. Her hair was flying out of the back like she was in a WARRANT video or something, it seemed like time slowed almost to a halt. The solo came up and at that moment I knew exactly what love was. It was happening all around me. It was a red sky, late afternoon on the Raleigh beltline and I was consumed by it...and by her. She was unbelievable.
Today I was on Facebook and found out that as of tomorrow Jan. 1, she will have been gone for 5 years. I had NO idea. I don't keep up with a lot of folks from high school. But I DO keep memories of some of the good times and she is in a lot of them.
Not sure if I will be able to listen to that solo again.
