free porn!

There was something about growing up in Raleigh that I always found to be a little weird. After the drive-in movie craze started going bust due to the advent of the VHS and later the DVD, there were a couple of them that started showing well…shhh! Porn. How did I know? Because it was right there in front of God and everybody, visible as you drove by, right there on the main highway! The Tower Shopping Center is now where the Tower Drive-In used to be. It’s right beside Old 64 Hwy. and used to be on the way to my Grandma’s house. If we were on the way back at night, it was nothing for us to pass by and look over to see it all hanging out. I mean, how was this legal? You could just pull over and walk up the hill behind the place and have a seat and enjoy the show. In fact, my great Uncle lived on TOP of that hill. I’m sure he peaked out the windows a few times, if he wasn’t actually sitting out on the front porch with a cool one. There were no fences or anything to try to hide these people’s dignity. Oh wait, they were porn actors and actresses, they had no dignity! Anyway, the same was the case as you left town on Hwy. 70 going towards Garner. I think it was called the Star-light Theatre or something, but it too was a full frontal get down pointed in the direction of the passers-by. What made this one even worse is that it was kinda in a curve so there was a longer time of XXX-posure! I’d never be caught dead at one of those places. I always went to the Forest Drive-In, which faced AWAY from the road. At least they had enough class to keep it away from the kiddies!

the one in garner was the center drive in. it went x about the same time as the ones you mentioned. and it was definitely on display for years as you mentioned. you could see folks in the trees behind the fence, watching the dang movie. our high school chemistry teacher's son used to work the box office and he'd see some of us pull up to the gate and he'd always say "come on in, save on gas!". some of us would tell our folks we had gone bowling. even had bowling bags in hand as we'd leave home. what a nutty time to be growing up. of course, i only went twice ;) i was afraid to be seen there.

Same thing happened with the one in my NJ neighborhood..Lawrence Drive-In. They went X during the heyday of Russ Meyer movies featuring giant yabbos amok. Then they had that animated porno "Fritz The Cat" and it was considered must-see with the local teens. By the mid-70s it degenerated into crass porn and it was too embarassing to even drive past.

I don't remember those two, but what about the Cairo in Fuquay and the Forest on Capitol Blvd. The Forest was where Buffalo and Capitol now cross and the Cairo was on 401 and you could see everything. People were pissed about that.
