writing lyrics

It used to worry the hell outta me to write lyrics. Ya know, when you’re 18 years old you’re thinking to yourself “what in the world would I write about?” I’ve eventually learned to take what the melody gives me. The meter of the rhythm is the key. I usually spit the first thing outta my mouth that fits in time with the beat. If it’s dumb as hell then I keep going until I hit pay dirt. You can’t be married to something and let it bog you down while you try to fit the square peg in the round hole. You have to get as much magic as you can while the inspiration is in the room. And even after that you have to push it until you’re fresh outta ideas. The longer you wait to get back to it, the harder it is. Revisiting an old idea is brutal. After days away from it you’re not in the same mindset as you were and that’s so important in keeping the song consistent. I don’t worry too much about it anymore. If it makes sense and I feel comfortable singing it then it’s a go. The main thing is that it has to roll off of the tongue. It’s really not as hard as some folks wanna make it.
